Not a full GN, but I’m proud to share that I have a comic currently on display in this exhibit at the Comic Art Museum in Brussels: https://www.comicscenter.net/en/exhibitions/the-great-temporary-exhibitions/reality-in-comics

Finally a topic I know something about 😅

I always say —and this is a fact— that I got to learn French for good because I wanted to read European comics in their original versions. And also because besides Tintin, Asterix and the Smurfs there is an entire universe of comics and creators few get to know about on this side of the West. And as one thing led to another, I eventually went to France and Europe's largest comics festival (Angoulême) twice, although I half-jokingly refer to it as the "manga festival of Europe" because that's what it has mainly become imo. However, comics as a medium is certainly regarded in high esteem by cultural organizations and the public over there and it finds a place on many niches besides entertainment. Education, discourse on current events, documentaries and so forth. That I consider a lofty goal to follow...

Oh, I am so envious! I've always wanted to check out the Festival de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême!!! It sounds amazing! And yes! I love that comic as a medium is so much more versatile there. On a brighter note then, there is so much growth opportunity and potential in terms of the market. ;-)

I have also always loved manga and BD. When the North American comics industry was becoming a much darker place for both creators and readers back in the 90's, I ended up reading lots of Japanese and French comics...

If you can read in French, I highly recommend "Les 7 Vies de l'Épervier" and "Plumes aux Vents" by Patrick Cothias and André Juillard. Also, "Le Sursis" and "Le Vol du Corbeau" by Jean Pierre Gibrat.

André Juillard passed away just last year. He was my favourite BDiste and a big influence on my own work. He also drew a children's BD series, "Blake et Mortimer," which is equally excellent!

This was very interesting. I learned a lot. Hope you are doing well, Maple, and staying creative. Some of the DJs complimented the Illo I licensed from you for our song, "A Thing Called Kindness." We go together well. Keep following your dreams! Peace, Annie Lynn

You're right! When I was in my teenage years, I tend to enjoy a lot of murder mystery comics. But as I become, um, wiser, I appreciate and enjoy a much bigger spectrum of topics in various genres. Good luck with your story idea!

I had no idea that the Louvre commissions comics! I definitely need to check them out. I really love BD as well, but I haven't read as much as I’d like. The ones that pop into my head are Blacksad, Sky Doll, and Un Été Sans Maman. But, Blacksad and Sky Doll are not for kids.
